Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about Repairverse, our programs, and how to get involved.

General Questions

Repairverse is a community-driven nonprofit organization based in Moncton, NB. We're dedicated to reducing waste, teaching repair skills, and connecting people across generations. Our programs include Repair Cafe (community repair workshops), SilverTech (digital literacy for seniors), Empower & Heal (therapeutic repair sessions), and SecondLifeLab (creative upcycling workshops).

Yes! All our programs are free to attend. We only ask for voluntary donations to help cover our operating costs (venue rental, supplies, etc.). We believe everyone should have access to repair services and education regardless of their financial situation.

Our primary location is Resurgo Place at 100 Cameron Street in downtown Moncton. However, we also hold events at the Moncton Public Library, community centres, and partner locations throughout the Greater Moncton area. Check our Events page for specific locations.

Repairverse was founded in March 2024. Since then, we've grown to include over 300 volunteers and have helped repair more than 2,500 items while training 200+ seniors in digital literacy.

Repair Cafe

You can bring most household items including:

  • Electronics (phones, laptops, tablets, radios)
  • Small appliances (toasters, kettles, lamps, fans)
  • Clothing and textiles (torn seams, broken zippers, buttons)
  • Furniture (wobbly chairs, broken drawers)
  • Bicycles (flat tires, brake adjustments, tune-ups)
  • Jewelry (clasps, chains)

We cannot repair large appliances (fridges, washing machines), items under warranty, or items that pose safety hazards.

No appointment is needed for Repair Cafe events - just drop in! However, we work on a first-come, first-served basis, so arriving early gives you the best chance of getting your item repaired. We recommend arriving within the first hour of the event.

No. All repairs are provided "as-is" with no warranty or guarantee. Our volunteers are skilled, but not all items can be fixed, and some repairs may not last. The goal is to teach you repair skills so you can maintain your items yourself. You participate at your own risk.

Sometimes items can't be repaired due to missing parts, extensive damage, or obsolete technology. Even if we can't fix your item, you'll learn why it failed and what to look for when purchasing a replacement. We can also suggest proper recycling options for electronics and other materials.

SilverTech (Digital Literacy)

SilverTech is designed specifically for seniors (generally 60+) who want to learn how to use technology confidently. Whether you've never used a smartphone or just need help with specific features, our patient volunteers will work with you at your own pace.

Yes, please bring your own smartphone, tablet, or laptop. Our volunteers will help you learn to use your specific device. If you don't have a device yet and are considering purchasing one, we can offer guidance on what might work best for your needs.

Our sessions cover a wide range of topics including:

  • Smartphone basics (making calls, sending texts)
  • Using apps and the app store
  • Video calling (Zoom, FaceTime, Skype)
  • Email setup and usage
  • Online safety and avoiding scams
  • Taking and sharing photos
  • Social media basics

We keep our groups small (4-6 participants) to ensure everyone gets personalized attention. We also offer one-on-one sessions for those who prefer individual instruction. Registration is recommended as spaces fill up quickly.

Volunteering

Not necessarily! While repair technicians do need relevant skills, we have many volunteer roles that don't require technical expertise:

  • Greeters: Welcome visitors and direct them to the right station
  • Admin Support: Help with social media, data entry, photography
  • Tech Trainers: Teach basic smartphone skills (patience matters more than expertise)
  • Event Support: Setup, cleanup, and general assistance

It depends on the role! Repair Cafe volunteers typically commit to 3-4 hours per event (monthly). SilverTech trainers commit to 2-hour sessions weekly or bi-weekly. Admin support can be done remotely on your own schedule. We're flexible and work with your availability.

Yes! All new volunteers receive orientation and role-specific training. SilverTech trainers receive additional training on teaching techniques and working with seniors. We also pair new volunteers with experienced mentors during their first few events.

A Vulnerable Sector Check is a background check required for volunteers who work with vulnerable populations (seniors, individuals in recovery programs). It's required for SilverTech trainers and Empower & Heal facilitators. We'll provide instructions on how to obtain one - the process is straightforward and we cover the cost.

Volunteers must be at least 16 years old. Volunteers aged 14-15 may participate with parental/guardian consent and must be accompanied by an adult. This is a great opportunity for high school students seeking volunteer hours!
